Syed’s story

How languages changed my life:

Meet PC Syed Ahmed, the bilingual officer working in Northumbria Police, helping make sure all our communities receive the support they need.

Being able to communicate with the public we serve and engage with them about crimes in their area, issues causing them concern and providing specialist support  when they need is crucial.

Here in Northumbria Police we are a Force for all and officers like PC Ahmed, who speaks Bengali and English, are helping us commit to that promise.

Being able to speak two languages massively helps me in my role. Interacting with different communities daily and being able to make them feel reassured and heard in their first language goes a long way to building their trust and confidence.

To connect with them on a more personal level not only helps us gather the evidence or intelligence we need to investigate crimes but improves the quality of service we can provide to them.

“I truly believe it makes me a better officer because I’m able to ensure victims are safeguarded in every possible way. This makes them feel supported and they’ll be confident in disclosing information that will help us investigate.

It shows to communities that there are people here in Northumbria Police that are willing to help them and take the time to build that rapport.

We really are a Force for all.

Do you speak other languages? Could you help police our fantastic communities? Then visit our careers website for more information on all the amazing opportunities to join us: https://careers.northumbria.police.uk/
