How languages changed my life:
I was brought up speaking 3 languages at home – French, German and Arabic. As a child, I lived in Senegal for 2 years and learned Wolof. At school, I was always chosen to attend international events and trips because of my language skills.
I am originally from Paris, but have been adopted Geordie since 1987.
A world of experiences
I studied languages at University in Paris, then received a scholarship to study anthropology and live with an native American tribe in the USA. The fact I could speak English was a big factor in getting chosen. I hold a Franco-American equivalent to an MPhil in Anthropology & Languages.
I started my first business as a promoter in the Music Industry aged 15 and was lucky over the years, to have worked with some of my heroes. As a music manager and promoter, I travelled the world with bands – some famous rock ones included. Thanks to my language skills, I was paid to help on many projects including interviews (incl. Bowie!), films and more.
I worked in Academia (local Universities) for 25 years and in business too.
I was a University Senior Lecturer in charge ofThe Languages Programme for NECLL (North East Centre for Lifelong Learning) until its closure in 2013. At that time, with the help of staff and students, I started The Language Centre in Newcastle as a Community Interest Company, as I believe in working IN the community and FOR the community.
Supporting language learning in the heart of the city
TLC offers the largest provision of language courses in the centre of Newcastle, for anyone interested in learning a new language, brushing up on forgotten skills or just keeping up and developing their proficiency. We offer courses from beginners to very advanced students, taught by experienced native speakers or teachers who have spent part of their lives in one of the countries where the language is spoken.
A sports pundit on the side
During the football World Cups, I am regularly interviewed on the subject of the French and Arabic-speaking teams by the BBC, I have been an interpreter for PSG/ NUFC and BBC radio, making good friends with some footballers and journalists along the way. I have also worked with the French rugby and athletics teams in UK competitions.
