How Languages Changed My Life
Languages have always been more than just a means of communication for me; they have been a gateway to opportunities, connections, and personal growth.
My journey with languages began at an early age, and over the years, they have shaped my career, broadened my worldview, and enriched my personal experiences in ways I could never have imagined.
Developing a love of languages in Turkey
I first started learning English at around 10 or 11 years old in Turkey, at Sami Yangın Anatolian High School in Kayseri. At that time, the education system in Turkey was quite different. After five years of primary school, students had to take an entrance exam to attend Anadolu Lisesi, prestigious schools equivalent to grammar schools in the UK. These schools included a preparatory year followed by three years of middle school and three years of high school.
When I entered the preparatory year, my family was going through a difficult time, and I had started living with my mother and little sister. As a result, I became more withdrawn and even shyer. I was particularly hesitant about English and felt a deep sense of fear towards the subject. I still remember my first quiz—I couldn’t even answer basic “to be” verb questions.
However, everything changed when I encountered teachers who truly believed in me. They encouraged me, helped me gain confidence, and most importantly, sparked my passion for the English language. Their support made me realise that English was not just a subject but a tool that could transform my life.
As my love for the language grew, so did my ambitions. I went on to study English Literature and Humanities, as well as English Language Teaching, at Eastern Mediterranean University, in North Cyprus, getting a full scholarship to study.
This period of my life was pivotal, not only because I was immersed in literature and linguistics but also because I discovered the power of education and the importance of cross-cultural communication.
From studying English Literature to obtaining qualifications in teaching and translation, my passion for languages led me to a career that spans multiple fields. As a teacher, translator, and interpreter, I have had the privilege of working with people from diverse backgrounds, breaking down barriers and fostering understanding.
Working for many years in large and cosmopolitan cities such as Ankara and Istanbul allowed me to engage in numerous national and international projects with my students. These experiences further deepened my love for the English language and strengthened my commitment to education.
A new life in Newcastle
A significant turning point in my life came when my beloved husband received a full scholarship for a PhD at Northumbria University. We moved to Newcastle upon Tyne, and we instantly fell in love with the city. The rich culture, welcoming community, and overall atmosphere made us feel at home. Living in Newcastle has brought us happiness and a sense of belonging.
Mastering the English language has also given me a sense of privilege and security. It has opened doors for me in both my personal and professional life, allowing me to feel confident in any setting.
A career supporting languages and cultures
Founding US Language Services and Consultancy in 2018 was a turning point in my professional life, allowing me to bridge the gap between cultures and help individuals navigate linguistic challenges.
Moreover, I started working as a Turkish and EAL tutor at Success4All. The organization’s vision and mission resonated deeply with me. Working with minority groups and supporting diversity has been incredibly fulfilling, as I see myself as a role model for other EAL learners. Success4All has made me feel truly valued and happy in my role, reinforcing my belief in the power of education and community support.
Languages are life-changing and enriching
Languages have played a vital role in my personal development. They have enabled me to travel, experience different cultures firsthand, and connect with people on a deeper level. Whether it was learning from the nuances of literature, engaging in meaningful conversations, or assisting others in expressing themselves in a foreign language, every step of my journey has reinforced the power of multilingualism.
Beyond professional success, languages have given me resilience and adaptability. As someone who has lived and worked in different countries, I have seen how language proficiency can empower individuals, giving them confidence and new perspectives. Through my work in HR, education, and consultancy, I continue to witness the transformative effect of language learning in people’s lives.
Perhaps the most profound impact of languages on my life is the sense of belonging they provide. They allow me to maintain my cultural roots while embracing new ones. They remind me that communication is more than just words; it is about connection, empathy, and understanding.
Looking ahead, I am committed to using my linguistic skills to make a difference—whether through writing books, teaching, or creating new resources for learners. Languages have shaped who I am, and I hope to continue inspiring others to embark on their own language journeys.
