The workshops for North East schools on 18th March at Great North Museum, Hancock, in Newcastle are already fully subscribed, but due to demand, they have introduced an opportunity for teacher-led activities, based on the same content, with bookings available throughout March.
The Great North Museum: Hancock is welcoming North East schools (KS2-3) to unearth a rich tapestry of languages, foster connections, and celebrate diversity. Explore our galleries through a linguistic lens, immersing students in French, Spanish, Latin and Hieroglyphics, inspiring them to discover the beauty of words, connect across cultures, and broaden their horizons.
Please note, this opportunity is not led by museum staff. They will book you in and greet you at the start of your visit but you will be leading your group’s learning throughout the visit. It is suggested attending 10am-2pm on days in March, to be arranged through booking with the GNM: Click here to complete the booking form and express an interest. Please share any access/learning needs when you fill in the form.
The day is split into 5×45 minute sessions: 4 teacher-led activities and a lunch time. Choose 4 activities from this menu of language delights:
o Use brand-new French or Spanish worksheets, translated by Newcastle University
o Egyptian Hieroglyphics code-cracking
o Translating Latin inscriptions from Hadrian’s Wall
o Borrow our brand-new story bag The word collector
o Borrow resources to explore diversity on Hadrian’s Wall.
o Dive into the language of space science with a visit to the planetarium (this activity costs, starting at £37 per show)
o Free time to explore the museum – you could touch on another topic you’re learning, try our museum-wide scavenger hunt or visit the shop.
Lunch – pupils will need to bring a packed lunch and drink. We will provide a space for you to eat, picnic-style.
