We are promoting three FREE national language competitions and celebrations that are happening between February and April 2024 for schools, as part of the Festival. These are an opportunity to celebrate languages in schools across the region through speaking, translating and singing. This can be a catalyst for inspiring and showcasing children and young people’s talent from all linguistic backgrounds.

Celebrate Speaking! National festival of speaking languages
1st-28th February 2024
Encourage your pupils to practise and celebrate the language they are learning or use in their community and take part in a virtual festival of speaking!
Pupils prepare a short poem, presentation, sketch, dialogue in the target language (solo or joint) and record the performances (film or powerpoint/bitmoji for under 16s) and upload them to Twitter or Instagram with the hashtags #CelebrateSpeaking and the language chosen (e.g. #French)
Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators
Registration open, competition 5th February to 28th March 2024
For UK schools KS3-5: This free-to-enter competition promotes language learning and inspires creativity for students of French, German, Italian, Mandarin, Spanish.
Teachers register and receive sets of resources for each language on translating poetry, fiction, non-fiction for use in build-up to competition. Entries must be submitted by 28th March 2024.
Register by 10th March and submit entries by 1st May 2024
UK schools (pupils aged 7-18 in any type of school) are invited to submit a short video or animated clip of your class’s own original French rap or song as part of this national competition.
Schools must register by 10th March to take part and submit videos by 1st May. Regional winners will enter the national competition and the national winners will be announced on 21st June (World Music Day). Prizes at all stages for winners.
