Join Káyìne Education for an inspiring in-person 2-hour activity session celebrating Nigerian and Yorùbá language and culture through dance, song, drumming and storytelling.
North East primary schools can register for one of four sessions for 30 pupils aged 7-11 and their teachers.
Registration required. Places are limited so book early. (Note: Pre-recorded workshops for schools are also available Jan-March).
Who is it for?
These in person sessions are available to four primary schools from Newcastle, Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Sunderland, Gateshead and Durham.
Each school can bring up to 30 pupils aged 7-11 and their teachers to participate in individual school sessions. Each school will have their own session.
When will it happen?
There are four sessions available:
- 9.30-11.30 on Tuesday 24th March FULLY BOOKED
- 12.30-2.30 on Tuesday 24th March FULLY BOOKED
- 9.30-11.30 on Monday 30th March FULLY BOOKED
- 12.30-2.30 on Monday 30th March FULLY BOOKED
Sessions will last 2 hours and schools are asked to arrive 10 minutes early. They will take place at Newcastle Civic Centre.
What is the activity?
These in-person sessions will be fun, engaging and interactive. Children will experience the richness of Yorùbá language and culture through and the rich heritage of Nigeria, Africa.
Each school will have an individual 2-hour session with Káyìne Education’s expert facilitators, including founder Victoria Eniola. During the session, pupils will be split into two groups to facilitate greater interaction and engagement around key elements of Yorùbá language and culture, which will provide rich cultural for all the children involved.
Key elements of the session are:
- Storytelling – sharing cultural insights through a Nigerian traditional story – with children encouraged to act out moments in the story
- Singing, dancing and drumming – as a means of expression and celebration, with children learning a simple song in Yorùbá, dance moves and playing on African drums
- Fashion and style – with African fabrics available for children to try on and have their own mini fashion parade
All children will also receive goody-bags at the end of the session.
Children will learn about Yorùbá and Nigerian language and culture through these creative activities. Some children may have Nigerian and/or Yorùbá backgrounds and these activities will enable this to be celebrated, as well as introducing children from other backgrounds to a rich and fascinating language and culture, to broaden their perspectives and empower them to find out more.
Children may wish to share what they have learned in assembly or community settings and create exhibitions about what they have learned.
How do I get involved?

Teachers should express interest in attending a session by emailing info@expressyourselfne.com with the following information:
- the name of this activity (Yoruba in-person session)
- your school lead contact and email address
- your school name and address
- the number of pupils who will be participating (30 pupils maximum per school) and what year group they are in
- the preference for a session date and time, if you have one, or if you are flexible
This helps us to monitor who is taking part and our reach across the region.
Schools will receive a confirmation email if they have secured a place. Schools with a place will receive venue details and directions, as well as photo permission forms 2-4 weeks before the session.
Places are limited and there will be a waiting list, in case any schools drop out. If you do not get a place, North East schools can access Káyìne Education’s Pre-recorded Yorùbá Language Culture Expression workshops, with teaching resources and videos. These can be delivered in schools from 6th January to 31st March.

Founded by Victoria Eniola in 2019, Káyìne Education is a team of dedicated educators who are passionate about empowering children and our community. They seek to encourage, educate and empower children through culture, language, history, music, art and drama. Based in Darlington, they deliver a range of workshops and activities across the North East and beyond. These include:
- Culture Pop-Ups around Black History and celebrating Nigerian culture
- Affirmation workshops showing children how to affirm themselves by designing culture specific affirmations tailored to each group of children, age, background, demographic and cultural identity
- Uplifting music and dance workshops , including instruments like Djembe – African drums, Shekere and more
- Consultation and idea mapping to integrate African culture and heritage in schools
- Yorùbá lessons: face to face workshops for primary schools and virtual classes for young people aged 16+ and adults
