Success4All has developed this free workshop activity, which can be delivered in North East schools, youth groups and community groups as part of this year’s Festival. It is a set of 4 short workshop activities introducing children and young people to four indigenous African languages and regions of Africa.
This is a great activity for Schools of Sanctuary, schools local youth and community groups and schools who either have children with African heritage or are interested in widening children’s knowledge and perspectives about the African continent, languages and culture.
Register with Caroline Afolabi Deleu by emailing caroline@s4a.org.uk to receive the activity pack, which includes a guidebook, Google Slides, a video containing key phrases for each language, a quiz and answers to the quiz.
This can be delivered in the classroom or in youth and community groups. The activity itself requires children and young people to work as a class to complete four activities which relate to the language and part of the region the language is spoken in. There are google slides for each area of Africa and language (North Africa – Tamazight, East Africa – Swahili, West Africa – Yoruba and South Africa – Xhosa).
By taking part in the activity, students will:
- Learn about North, South, East & West African countries & their geography
- Gain an understanding of the North, South, East & West African people, their history, & culture.
- Gain an appreciation of the diversity of African cultures and recognise the importance of cultural preservation.
