How languages changed my life:
There is an expression ‘The limits of my language are the limits of my world’. The more languages I learn the wider world I see. I believe languages are like bridges that have given me the opportunities to reach the other banks as I could not rely on my swimming abilities.
They broaden our minds, increase the chance of building a great network and knowing a foreign language is at the top of the superpowers list.
We are always impacted by words, many years ago when my tutor told me that I am talented in learning foreign languages, she changed my life that day and I set a new goal – to start learning a new one. I chose Turkish language as we are impacted not only by words but also popular culture and the number of Turkish songs and series I listened to and watched was enormous.
I entered Kyiv National Linguistic University in 2016 and got fascinated by different people who had the same interests – languages, older students were sharing with me exciting stories of their journeys and our teachers were superheroes who taught us superpowers and I knew for sure it was a right place to be.
The process of learning a new language requires a lot of effort, but it is so much easier to do anything when you are motivated and supported. I had a chance to be the part of student exchange programmes twice. Basically, it helped me to overcome my biggest fear – the speaking a language barrier.
When I met native speakers, I was afraid of not being understood or wasting their time by speaking more slowly and possibly with errors. But you will be always surprised how native speakers are always amazed by your effort speaking their language, they are friendly and extremely supportive.
Supporting refugees in Türkiye
After my graduation I decided to join a project in the Republic of Türkiye, which was focused on helping refugees adjusting to a new life in foreign country. I could not even imagine that time that soon enough my relatives, friends and I would experience the same. During the project I worked part time as a translator in clinic and due to languages, a lot of people were delivered high quality of treatment. The project presented the opportunity to meet people all round the world and become best friends as language was not a barrier for us.
Welcoming fellow Ukrainians and other refugees to Newcastle
Among the amazing people I met in Türkiye was my partner, who is from Newcastle. We planned to meet my family in Ukraine and cherish the moments together, but the war broke out in our lives and changed them drastically. But since the 24th of February we have only one goal – victory, everyone contributes in their own way. I knew my tool was languages, I actively participated in voluntary groups and helped others.
The bridge has been built between City of Sanctuary and people in need who are always welcomed here. I am very grateful to have my role with Newcastle City Council as it has given me the opportunity to support new arrivals and make the transition process easier.
Every time I start speaking mother tongue with Ukrainians, I see smiles. The fact that they can hear, understand, and then share in a first language makes them more comfortable and less stressed.
Within these last few months I witnessed a switch and growth of people who did not speak any English when they arrived to Newcastle. The support and guidance provided in the city by universities, charities and centres has allowed people to improve their skills, become confident and believe in themselves.
So, languages are very powerful tools which give the keys to open new doors and meet amazing people, just keep motivated and you will succeed!
