Primary German sessions online with Wuschel and the Goethe Institut: 9.30am-10.15am 9th and 16th March 2026
Join Wuschel the friendly alien for fun-filled online German taster sessions with the Goethe-Institut. Perfect for primary aged children eager to learn their first words of German through engaging and interactive activities. No prior knowledge of German is required.
Pupils will sing catchy songs, complete challenges and play games, all centred around the book, ‘Wuschel auf der Erde’, illustrated by Axel Scheffler.
Teachers will receive free prizes for their classes, as well as ideas and resources for setting up a German club! Registration is required – open UK wide. Recordings available to registered schools.
Who is it for?
- UK Primary schools (Key Stage 1-2 pupils)
- These sessions are open to schools across the UK and attendance is unlimited
- No prior knowledge of German is required to take part
When will it happen?
- The sessions will be online from 9.30.10.15am on 9th and 16th March (the same sessions, repeated)
- Please ensure you join the session early as they will start at 9.30am prompt
What is the activity?
Registered schools will be able to join these 45 minute sessions online.
Delivered by experienced staff from the Goethe-Institut, these fun-filled online German taster sessions are perfect for primary children eager to learn their first words of German through engaging and interactive activities. Pupils and teachers do not need to have any prior knowledge of the language.
The Wuschel Live Sessions are based around the new story book illustrated by Axel Scheffler, Wuschel auf der Erde. The children will be introduced to their first words of German through the adventures of the alien Wuschel and his friends.
The sessions will be packed with opportunities for singing catchy songs, completing challenges and playing games.
The sessions can be supported by non-specialist teachers in the classroom who will have guidance on facilitating the engagement of children in the activities.
Teachers participating will also receive free prizes for their classes, as well as ideas and resources for setting up a German club!
The online sessions will be hosted on Microsoft Town Hall by Newcastle City Council. Cameras and microphones will be turned off, but teachers can submit any questions in the chat, during the sessions.
The session will be recorded and made available to schools who have registered, but are not able to make the live sessions. These schools will also receive resources for setting up a German Club, including stickers, bookmarks, posters and small prizes.
How do I get involved?
Email info@expressyourselfne.com to register and provide all of the following information:
- the name of the activity (WUSCHEL Primary German live lessons)
- your school name and address
- teacher contact name and email
- how many pupils you expect to be involved and their age/year group
- Please also state your preference for either 9th or 16th March, or both (the sessions are the same)
- If you cannot attend live and want to receive the recording afterwards
Joining instructions will be emailed in advance (in February) to all who register.
The session can be accessed from the classroom or remotely from home. Attendees do not share screens or access cameras or microphones.
Schools who cannot attend the live sessions can also register to receive the recording, providing your school name and address, teacher contact name and email and how many pupils you expect to be involved. You will be sent a link to this after the session for use in the classroom or community settings.
