Language and culture taster sessions KS2-5 (with Careers with Languages option) – Flexible bookings in February and March 2026 (online or in person)

Teachers from North East Primary, Secondary Schools and Sixth Forms – do you want to give your students a taste of different languages, cultures or countries, as well as the option to include an of careers with languages session?
Book 30-45 minute virtual taster sessions or 2 hour in-person sessions and choose from a selection of European and world languages. Sessions are arranged directly with you and tailored to your needs.
These fun, interactive sessions are led by Student Language Ambassadors from Newcastle University’s Language Resource Centre.
Who is it for?
- Teachers and pupils from primary (Key Stage 2) and secondary schools and sixth forms in Newcastle, Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Gateshead, Durham and Sunderland.
When will it happen?

- Schools have the option of booking online or in-person sessions during February and March 2026 – bookings open from mid-November and we recommend getting in touch to express interest early to avoid disappointment:
- Online language tasters of 30-45 minutes
- In person sessions are available on Newcastle University campus at the Language Resource Centre and will require a minimum of 2 hours per session and there is an option to include a Careers with Languages section during the visit
- Teachers will agree the date and time of their school session with Newcastle University Language Resource Centre, whose Student Language Ambassadors will be running the session.
What is the activity?
Online: These are fun, interactive 30-45 minute sessions, led by Student Language Ambassadors seeking to promote an interest in language and different cultures.
In person: These are 2 hour sessions with Student Language Ambassadors on campus, exploring languages and cultures and with the option to include a Careers in Languages section during the session.
For both activities, teachers can choose the language and culture they want their students to experience and contact the Language Resource Centre at Newcastle University to express an interest. The LRC will try to accommodate as many schools as possible and arrange a suitable time, based on availability in February and March. There is a wide range of European and world languages on offer and schools can select their preferred language.
The events are varied and are dependent on your requirements and the availability of Student Language Ambassadors. The sessions can be tailored to best match the age range of the pupils. A typical example would be a student-led session with an accompanying powerpoint, some practice of words or a quiz about a region or a cultural event, as well as the optional Careers in Languages section.
Safeguarding: Only one group from your Primary School, Secondary School or Sixth Form will be involved in each session – so you can be assured of the safety of the session and also have the taster session all to yourselves.
For virtual sessions, the type of online platform used will be agreed between the teacher and the University, depending on the school’s requirements around safeguarding and what they prefer (Zoom, Teams etc).

Teachers from North East Primary, Secondary Schools or Sixth Forms should email routesne@ncl.ac.uk at Newcastle University’s Language Resource Centre to express an interest in the language and culture taster sessions – please include the following information:
- teacher name and contact details
- the name and address of the school
- the number of young people expected to participate and what Key Stage they are in
- the language and culture they want their students to experience
The Language Resource Centre will liaise with the teacher contact arrange a suitable time. If your first preference is not available, we will try to arrange one that is. Sessions will be arranged based on the availability of Student Language Ambassadors and we will try to accommodate as many schools as possible.
