German A Level Film and Literature Day at Newcastle University: 9.30am-2.30pm on 21st March 2025

We welcome teachers and their A-level students of German to Newcastle University for a day focused on success at A-level. Expert hosts will guide students in developing their knowledge featuring (amongst others) Das Leben der Anderen, Goodbye, Lenin!, Der Besuch der alten Dame, and Der Vorleser.
This event is hosted and facilitated by the School of Modern Languages at Newcastle University in partnership with the Centre for Foreign Language Study at Durham University, supported by the Tyne to Tees MFL Hub.
Registration is required.
Who is it for?
- Year 12 and 13 students aged 16-19 from schools in the North East (and neighbouring regions where places are available)
- The event is limited to 30 A-level participants.
- Staff from school must accompany students in order to comply with safeguarding

What is the activity?
The A-level German day will give A-level students an opportunity to collaborate with experts on German literature, film and language pedagogy at Newcastle University.
They will have the opportunity to take a closer look at their A-level set text and think through strategies for engaging successfully with German cultural texts for their A-levels.
Specific sessions targeting films and literature will outline techniques for close reading and analysis, as well as giving students a deeper insight into the cultural contexts in which these texts were originally produced.

Schools should click here to complete the online form to register interest. You will be asked to provide their school name and address, contact name and email and the number of pupils they would like to take part in the event, as well as your book preference.
Places are limited to 30 A Level students, so early booking is essential. Schools will be informed if they have a place.
Joining instructions will be emailed to those who have confirmed places. Paid public parking and public transport connections are available nearby; parking is not available on campus.
Parts of the event will be recorded and photo/video permission forms will be sent out. Photos will be taken and images may be used for partners’ and the Festival’s social media and publicity.
