Experience Japan with The Japan Society: 10-12 and 1-3 on 13th March 2026 at Newcastle Civic Centre FULLY BOOKED

Pupils from Key Stage 2 and 3 in the North East can experience Japanese language and culture with The Japan Society on 13th March at Newcastle Civic Centre.

The Japan Society will deliver language taster sessions and a cultural activity to inspire children and young people. Children will learn some Japanese language and take part in Japanese cultural activities. Registration required.


Who is it for?

  • Pupils in Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 in schools in Newcastle, Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Sunderland, Gateshead and Durham
  • No previous experience of the language is required
  • There are places for 4 schools (30 pupils per school), with 2 schools per session (morning or afternoon)

When will it happen?

  • There are two sessions: 10am-12pm and 1-3pm on Friday 13th March 2026 FULLY BOOKED
  • Sessions will take place at Newcastle Civic Centre

What is the activity?

Pupils will have the opportunity to experience interactive Japanese language and cultural sessions with The Japan Society staff.

Both the morning and the afternoon session will involve two schools each, with 30 places available for each school. Four schools in total will have the opportunity to be involved.

The event will run in a carousel format with each individual school receiving two 1-hour sessions with dedicated staff from The Japan Society and swapping over after their first session.

  • In one session, pupils participate in a fun Japanese language taster session
  • In the other session, pupils will spend time taking part in different Japanese cultural activities

This is a unique opportunity to engage with The Japan Society, who are delivering their first in-person sessions in the North East.

How do I get involved?

There are places for 4 schools (30 pupils per school). There will be 2 schools in each session. THIS EVENT IS FULLY BOOKED

Schools should register interest in the workshops by emailing info@expressyourselfne.com with the following information:

  • the name of the activity (Experience Japan)
  • the school’s lead contact name and email
  • the name and address of your school
  • the number of young people expected to participate and their ages
  • schools should also express their preference, if you have one, for the morning (10am-12pm) or afternoon (1-3pm) session and we will try to accommodate this.

There will be a waiting list, in case any schools drop out and places will be reallocated.

You will be sent an email initially, to confirm whether you have or do not have places at the event. Those who do have places will be sent any additional details about the venue and attendance, in advance of the event.
