Interactive Language Activities with Northumbria University Language Centre – Year 12 French, Spanish or German learners

Who is it for?

• French and/or Spanish or German teachers from Secondary Schools and Sixth form Colleges and their pupils in Newcastle, Northumberland, North Tyneside, Gateshead, South Tyneside, Durham and Sunderland
• Year 12 A level language pupils (and a limited number of places for Year 11)

When will it happen?

• The language activities sessions will take place at 2-4pm on 18th March 2026 (register by 7th February) on Northumbria University City Campus West on Sandyford Road in the centre of Newcastle.
• The activity will consist of two 45 minute sessions and one 30 minute university student-led session.

What is the activity?

The taster sessions programme is available in French, Spanish and German.  It offers A Level language pupils the opportunity to take part in a variety of fun, interactive activities in the selected language in a university setting and with staff and university language students. 

For each language, the programme of sessions will include language and culture related activities, starting with a 45-minute session, followed by a 30-minute student-led session then a second 45-minute session. 

A typical combination of sessions would include oral skills practice tasks and culture related activities such as a presentation on a cultural aspect of the country followed by an interactive quiz, or activities such as murder mystery and introduction to interpreting. 

The 30 minute student-led session focuses on sharing experiences of the year abroad with your pupils and will provide a forum for questions and answers. 

Safeguarding: Pupils participating will remain with their school peers and teachers in all sessions.  Pupils will remain in the same room for the duration of the event. Participants are expected to follow NHS guidance available at the time of the event. 

How do I get involved?

French,  Spanish  and German teachers in North-East secondary and sixth form colleges should email Florence Potot florence.potot@northumbria.ac.uk in the Northumbria Language Centre to register for the event by 7th February 2026. 

Please note that places are limited and will be allocated based on a first come first served basis. Confirmation of places will be sent within a week of receiving the expression of interest.

Venue details and language specific programmes of activities will be provided to participants nearer the time in anticipation of the event.

Limited parking spaces are available on request. Please submit your request at the time or registration for the event.

Schools who register interest, but do not get places on 18th March, will be advised of any future opportunities to engage with Northumbria Language Centre.
